SCDA has received a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £36,449 for an exciting heritage project, Newhaven Heritage Routes, based from the Newhaven Active Travel Hub. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project will focus on engaging local communities in discovering and sharing the natural, industrial and maritime heritage of Newhaven and its connections with surrounding towns and villages.

Supported through the Heritage Fund, the project will launch in January 2023 and will bring local people together in peer groups with local historian, Dr Jenny Flood, to create unique local heritage walking and cycling trails.  With this project, we will engage the community in exploring the history of the town’s development, and how it links with the present-day landscape.

We want to help people from across Newhaven to get actively involved in this project. Working with the local community historian and Newhaven Museum, participants have the opportunity to tell their own stories, capture stories from friends and families, and visit local places of interest.  Activities will bring together archive material and local memories in new way and make this information accessible in the form of Newhaven Heritage Route trail leaflets and guided walks and rides.
