Youth Counselling

You talk, we listen..

A professional, ethical counselling service for young people.

Our service is run within SCDA in association with Sussex Community Counselling which is accredited by the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.

Carefully selected Youth Counsellors

All counsellors working in our youth service are either qualified or in the later stages of their training and have been chosen because of their specific experience, training or aptitudes for working with young people. Youth counsellors in our service work voluntarily and are not paid for this work. They are DBS checked.

What is available

We offer up to 12 free, 50-minute, weekly, telephone counselling sessions.

Our provision

The process we follow is:

  • We receive a referral
  • We arrange an assessment appointment to make sure counselling is suitable for the young person
  • We add them to our waiting list if we do not have a counsellor available now
  • When they are at the top of our waiting list we arrange the first counselling session.

We accept referrals from young people, their parents or carers and professionals.

Information for young people

What is expected from me?

You will meet with your counsellor alone, either on the phone or in person.  If you are meeting in person you can have a friend or family member wait in Reception if you want. Sometimes you might find the things you want to talk about upset you and we will work to support you with anything that you find difficult.

Do I have to come to counselling?

Someone else might have suggested counselling to you but you don’t have to come, you can choose whether you want to have counselling.

Counselling is a time for you to talk privately about what is troubling you and how you are. Some things would have to be shared with others, for instance if you or someone else was at risk of harm or if the Courts require information from us.
